The Wake Up is a morning dance party event started in 2015 by Tanisha Christie & Natasha L. Johnson as a creative response to the death of Sandra Bland and the on-going police brutality in the black community. For the past year, the pop-up event has been held at C’mon Everybody as a dry event from 6:30a-10a for anyone who desires to ‘wake up’ the mind & body as a creative form of communal healing, protest and liberation. The event features an MC; DJ’s spinning the dope beats from Hip-Hop-R&B-Funk-Pop-Reggae-Soul; coffee, water and some light eats.
Proceeds from the event go to a Brooklyn-based not-for-profit organization.
Artists from previous events:
MC Cav Manning of the Wonderground Party, DJ Dick @ Nite, DJ Reborn, JD Urban – photography; DJ Amir, Brian Polite; DJ Natasha Diggs and Manchild Black
Organizations: Black Lives Matter – NYC; Black Alliance for Just Immigration; Globalizing Gender; The Brooklyn Movement Center
Sponsors: Joe Coffee, Chef Cynthia, Roots Hummus

Flag/Body

Part experimental, verite-style video short, part minstrel performance, the piece captures a black, female artist exploring the politic of citizenry wearing an Uncle Sam costume in post 9/11 New York City. The piece was a four-channel installation.
